Mindsight | By Kristine Glenn
If human behavior is your jam, our CMYK Kids Director, Dr Jenny, has a great recommendation for those who want to know more about why we do what we do.
Mindsight by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D.
“The brain is so complicated it staggers its own imagination”.
- Sir John Eccles, Neurophysiologist,
Given the number of neurons and synapses in our brains, there are more firing combinations than there are atoms in the known universe. Yet we regularly repeat the same behavior patterns over and over. Why is that? And can we influence it? In his book, Mindsight, Dr Siegel describes the structure, development and functioning of the brain and mind in the context of psychotherapy and case studies.
His real aim, however, is to describe and teach the concept of ‘mindsight’ - the ability to sense and shape energy and information flow within ourselves. With mindsight’s insight and focus, we can actively work to fully connect and integrate the complex system that comprises our mind, brain and body.
Admittedly, this may sound a bit woo-woo. But the book is based upon a synthesis of current neuroscience and psychotherapy, combined with ancient contemplative practices. It’s a highly readable and engaging book for those interested in understanding themselves better and making sense of the world around them.
